Kathryn Newton Sneaked a Buffy Homage Into Ready or Not 2 — and SMG Didn’t Even Notice at First

This is a lovely bit of behind-the-scenes trivia from the set of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Kathryn Newton, who plays SMG’s character’s sister Faith in the film, showed up to set having done her Buffy homework — and quietly recreated one of the most iconic looks from the original series without telling anyone.

The outfit traces back to the very first episode. In “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” the pilot that aired on March 10, 1997, Buffy arrives at Sunnydale High wearing a blue button-down layered over a white tank top, with a messy updo and wispy bangs. It’s peak late-’90s Slayer energy, and it’s the look Newton chose to recreate.

The best part? Sarah Michelle Gellar had no idea it was coming. “I didn’t know any of this,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “So, Kathryn brought in a picture of Buffy in this outfit. She had sort of had this idea of what it was.” It was only when they were actually filming their first scene together that SMG clocked it. “I was like, ‘You know, your outfit reminds me of something.’ And she was like, ‘Does it?'”

Gellar says she now has a side-by-side of the two looks, and that the hairdo in particular is spot-on. It’s a genuinely sweet nod from Newton — the kind of thing that only happens when someone is a real fan of the source material and wants to pay their respects properly.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is currently in cinemas.
