Joyce is diagnosed with a brain tumour. Glory creates a Sobekite demon — a cobra-based tracker — to locate the Key. Riley, processing his feelings about Buffy by letting vampire women bite him in a hostess bar, is discovered by Spike and Xander. The episode is managing several anxieties at once, and Joyce’s diagnosis lands quietly in the middle of a busy episode and simply sits there. The show understands what’s coming and doesn’t oversell it.
What Happens
The Sobekite tracks Dawn and the Scoobies fight it — Buffy kills it in the hospital car park while Joyce is inside having tests. Riley’s secret feeding is discovered. He and Buffy argue, and the argument is about more than the biting — it’s about the fact that Buffy can’t give him what he needs and both of them know it. Joyce’s tumour is inoperable without significant risk. The episode ends on a hospital corridor.
