Have you ever had one of those moments where you find out something about a show you’ve watched a million times that just completely blows your mind? Turns out, even the cast members themselves have those moments. Recently, a story has been making the rounds about Charisma Carpenter (our beloved Cordelia Chase) and one of the most heartbreaking episodes in the entire series. And honestly, it’s just the best.
So, here’s the deal. On a recent podcast with the legendary Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, The Mandalorian), Charisma dropped a bombshell that proves just how much she was a working actor and not a hardcore Buffy fan during the show’s run. For 22 years, she had no idea that Buffy’s mother, Joyce Summers, died.
In the podcast, Charisma explained that she was always so busy working that she never watched the shows. She’d read her own scripts for her scenes but would miss a lot of the other storylines. She even gave an example of a classic Buffy and Angel scene from Season 1 that she had never seen. This makes a lot of sense, especially since Cordelia’s story moved over to the spin-off, Angel, after Season 3. Joyce’s death, of course, took place in Season 5 of Buffy.
So how did she find out? It’s a story worthy of a gag reel. Charisma was on a panel with Kristine Sutherland, the actress who played Joyce. Kristine was talking about her character’s death, and Charisma, in pure Cordelia fashion, leaned over and whispered, “You die?!” Kristine’s response? A simple, “Yeah.”
It’s a fantastic piece of behind-the-scenes trivia that highlights just how impactful that episode, “The Body,” was. For many of us, Joyce’s death was a pivotal, soul-crushing moment. It was a completely grounded, non-supernatural death that showed us even the Chosen One can’t defeat every enemy. The episode is famous for having no musical score, creating a heavy, silent atmosphere that makes the raw grief of the characters feel incredibly real.
The best part of this story is that now, all these years later, Charisma is finally watching the entire Buffy and Angel series for a new podcast she’s doing. She’s getting to experience these moments for the first time, right alongside the fans. It’s a reminder that even for the people who helped bring the show to life, there are still new things to discover in the Buffyverse.
