Buffy’s roommate Kathy (Dagney Kerr) is aggressively, comprehensively irritating — she labels her food, plays Céline Dion on repeat, and borrows things without asking. Buffy becomes convinced Kathy is a demon. The Scoobies become convinced Buffy is losing her mind. Both things turn out to be true. Kathy is a Mok’tagar demon who has been stealing Buffy’s soul fragments in order to evade her own dimension’s authorities. The episode is a perfect execution of its comedy premise.
What Happens
Buffy’s soul fragments, stolen during sleep, are making her increasingly paranoid. She eventually tackles Kathy, which prompts Kathy to drop the human appearance. Her own people come to collect her. Buffy gets a new roommate: no one. The episode is a catalogue of the specific cruelties of enforced cohabitation, played as horror comedy.
Key Moments
Kathy’s face coming off. Played for laughs, but the special effects commit to it completely. And the running Céline Dion gag, which is more resonant now than it was in 1999 — Kathy’s tastes as the platonic image of the unthreatening mainstream.
Monster / Villain
Kathy — who is actually just trying to stay in the human dimension and avoid her family. Sympathetic, in her way, though the soul-stealing is a dealbreaker.

Where It Fits
Living Conditions is Season 4 doing what it’s good at in its lighter moments — finding the supernatural metaphor in a completely mundane university experience. Kathy as the nightmare roommate is simple and well-executed.
