The Scoobies run. Glory has revealed herself fully; Buffy has concluded she cannot defeat her; they flee Sunnydale in a Winnebago. The Knights of Byzantium — a human order dedicated to destroying the Key — pursue them and attack. Giles is badly injured. They take shelter in an abandoned petrol station. Glory finds them. Ben, in an act of betrayal, tells Glory where they are. Glory arrives, takes Dawn, and leaves. The episode is action-led and its final minutes are very bleak.
What Happens
The Knights attack the Winnebago on the highway — spears, horses, helicopters, the full medieval fanatic arrangement. Giles is spear-wounded. They shelter in a disused building. Buffy parleys with General Gregor (Wayne Tippit), who explains what opening the Key will do: not just Glory’s return home, but the dissolution of the walls between dimensions — every dimension, simultaneously. Ben is captured, escapes, summons Glory himself. She takes Dawn. The Scoobies are left in the ruins.
Key Moments
Buffy’s breakdown — not dramatic, just quiet: she sits on the floor and stops functioning. Glory has Dawn. She doesn’t know what to do. This is new. Willow bringing her back: “Buffy. We need you to come back to us.” And Buffy coming back.

Where It Fits
Spiral is the action episode that sets up The Gift’s impossible choices. It moves quickly and doesn’t give the audience time to process before the finale arrives.
