Buffy counsels students. A girl named Cassie Newton (Azura Skye) tells her she’s going to die on Friday. Buffy investigates and tries to prevent it. She cannot. Cassie dies of a heart condition — not from the cult trying to sacrifice her, not from any threat Buffy could have stopped. The episode is about the limits of being able to help, and it is handled with exceptional restraint.
What Happens
Cassie is prescient and matter-of-fact about her coming death. She’s made peace with it. Buffy hasn’t, and won’t. The cult summoning is stopped; the booby trap one of them sets is survived. Cassie walks away, alive. Her heart stops. She falls. The episode ends with her body in a corridor and Buffy unable to process it. Cassie said things to Spike that she couldn’t have known — “She says you have to help her.” She was a conduit for something. But she’s also just dead from a heart condition, age sixteen.
