Buffy joins the Initiative. Professor Walsh, having assessed her, decides she’s a liability and sends her on a mission designed to kill her. Buffy survives. Walsh is killed — by Adam, the project she’s been building in secret, who decides to be born early. This is the episode where the season’s actual threat announces itself, and Walsh’s death is quick and genuinely shocking.
What Happens
Buffy’s integration into the Initiative impresses Riley and unsettles Walsh. Walsh sends Buffy into a hostile situation with a disabled communicator, planning to report her killed in the field. Buffy survives and confronts Walsh by video link: “I figured it out.” Walsh turns off the screen and then is killed by Adam — a human/demon/machine hybrid she assembled in the Initiative’s lower levels. She doesn’t see him coming. Adam reactivates and walks out.
Key Moments
Adam’s first appearance on screen — Frankenstein’s monster with a skewer arm, calm, large, apparently curious about the world. And Buffy’s broadcast confrontation with Walsh: “Just so we’re clear, I’m not dead.” Walsh’s expression in that moment contains the awareness that she has made an error.
