The Watchers Council arrives in force to evaluate Buffy before providing information about Glory. They interview everyone, are condescending, and threaten Giles’s visa. Buffy, halfway through the episode, realises that the power dynamic is backwards: they need her, not the other way around. She tells them so. The Council backs down. Giles gets his job back with retroactive pay. The episode is one of the most purely satisfying in the season.
What Happens
The Council brings a team — Quentin Travers (Harris Yulin), interviewers, assessors — to evaluate Buffy’s fitness. They threaten to have Giles deported and withhold information about Glory. Buffy processes this and then goes to face them: she fires and rehires Giles, she sets conditions, and she reminds them that without a Slayer they have nothing. Travers agrees. The information about Glory: she’s a god. Three monks separated her from her human vessel — Ben — and she cannot be killed by conventional means.
Key Moments
Buffy’s speech to the Council — delivered standing in a training room, without props, entirely from character. It’s a moment of someone understanding their own power and using it without aggression. One of Gellar’s best scenes in the series.

Where It Fits
Checkpoint is the episode that establishes Buffy’s maturity — she’s no longer deferring to institutions. The Council information about Glory being a god raises the stakes for the season’s back half considerably.
