Buffy’s eighteenth birthday. A Cruciamentum — an ancient Watchers Council test in which the Slayer is stripped of her powers and locked in a building with a vampire — is administered without her knowledge, with Giles slowly drugging her for weeks beforehand. When she finds out, the episode stops being about the test and becomes about betrayal. Giles chooses Buffy over the Council and is subsequently fired. It is a pivotal episode for both of them.
What Happens
The vampire for the test — Zachary Kralik (Jeff Kober), a serial killer driven mad before he was turned — escapes and kidnaps Joyce. Buffy, still without her powers, has to defeat him using her wits: she finds his medication, swaps the water in his capsule for holy water. He dissolves. The Council witness fires Giles for having a “father’s love” for Buffy that compromises his neutrality. Buffy and Giles have a conversation in which neither of them says what they mean and both of them mean everything.
Key Moments
The scene where Buffy confronts Giles about the drugging. She doesn’t shout. She’s past shouting. “You were a part of it,” she says, and leaves him standing in his flat with nothing to say. Anthony Stewart Head is remarkable in this scene.
Monster / Villain
Zachary Kralik — genuinely disturbing, a killer who never stopped being one after being turned. The Watchers Council, who designed this situation and consider it a reasonable test.
Notable Quote
“You’re not my Watcher anymore.” — Buffy, to Giles. Technically the Council’s decision. Also hers.
Where It Fits
Helpless is the episode that damages the Giles/Buffy relationship and makes it more real. He did something wrong. She knows it. They will continue to work together, but the trust is different now. The Watchers Council is established as an institution willing to endanger its Slayers for the sake of tradition.
