A spell to locate Potentials identifies Amanda — one of Dawn’s classmates — and briefly appears to identify Dawn. The episode is a character piece about Dawn’s role in a season full of Potential Slayers, and it handles her position with real delicacy. She’s not a Slayer. She never will be. She helps Amanda anyway. Xander, in a closing monologue, tells her what she is.
What Happens
Dawn thinks she might be a Potential; the Scoobies treat her carefully around this possibility. The actual Potential, Amanda, is tracked through a vampire situation that Dawn and the other Potentials navigate. Amanda is identified. Dawn is not. Dawn processes this, and then rescues Amanda anyway, doing better than most of the actual Potentials. Xander finds her on the porch.
Key Moments
Xander’s speech to Dawn — about being the one who watches, who sees, who understands without being exceptional. “The rest of us… we literally see more than most humans. I see you, Dawn. And through the years I’ve watched you from the outside, and you’re remarkable.” Nicholas Brendon is very good in it.

Where It Fits
Potential gives Dawn something the season needs — an honest accounting of what she is and why it matters — without making her a Slayer. It also gives Xander his finest moment of Season 7 and positions him as the one who truly sees without powers of his own.
