Willow returns from England and a spell she cast unconsciously — out of fear of how the Scoobies would react to seeing her — has put her slightly out of phase with everyone else. They can’t see her; she can’t see them. A Gnarl demon is paralyzing victims and eating their skin. Willow, invisible to her friends, encounters the demon alone. The episode handles Willow’s shame and her fear of judgment with real grace.
What Happens
Willow is in Sunnydale but out of phase. She and the Scoobies keep missing each other by moments. The Gnarl paralyzes Buffy and begins eating her. Willow finds them, makes herself visible to Anya alone, and together they find the Gnarl’s cave. Willow kills it by gouging out its eyes — a significant step for someone trying to manage her power carefully. She and Buffy have a quiet reconciliation at the episode’s end, Buffy’s wound healing, both of them working through what’s between them.
Key Moments
Willow alone in Sunnydale, unable to reach the people she came back for, afraid to. The spell as literal enactment of social anxiety — the show at its best using supernatural mechanics to illustrate interior states. And the eye-gouging: Willow doing something brutal and necessary, which is its own kind of statement.

Where It Fits
Same Time, Same Place brings Willow back to Sunnydale and demonstrates that the show intends to handle her recovery carefully rather than reset her to pre-Dark Willow status. She’s different. She’s trying. The season needs both of those things.
