Xander-centric, formally playful, and one of the best episodes the show ever made. While the Scoobies deal with an apocalypse so large it takes place entirely in the background, Xander — told he is the “zeppo” of the group, the one with no special gift — has his own adventure involving a cool car, zombie teenagers, a bomb under the school, and a brief but consequential encounter with Faith. The episode is a deconstruction of the show’s own conventions that somehow also works as a straight Xander story.
What Happens
Jack O’Toole (Channon Roe) is a dead student Xander accidentally runs with, who reanimates three of his dead friends and plans to blow up the school. Xander ends up having to defuse the bomb himself, in the boiler room, alone, while the sounds of a world-ending battle filter in from somewhere above. He defuses it. He doesn’t tell anyone. At the end, the Scoobies congratulate themselves on saving the world; Xander says nothing.
Key Moments
Xander and Faith — a brief, physical encounter that the episode treats with more dignity than it might, because it’s genuinely about Xander’s transition from boy to something more functional. And the bomb defusal sequence: the show refuses to make it dramatic. Xander is just scared and doing the thing anyway.
