A Potential named Chloe hangs herself, having been manipulated by the First. Buffy is furious — at the Potentials for being scared, at the Scoobies for not being what they were. She goes through a portal connected to the origin of the Slayer power and meets the Shadow Men — the three who created the first Slayer. They offer to make her stronger; she refuses. The episode is partly about the cost of the Slayer’s dark origin, and partly Buffy telling everyone to be better.
What Happens
The Shadow Men restrained the first Slayer, filled her with demon essence, created something powerful from violation. Buffy refuses the same enhancement offered to her — she won’t be made stronger at cost to her identity. She comes back with knowledge instead: the Seal of Danzalthar will open the Hellmouth, and the First has a vast army below. Spike, who has been retreating into his old habits, is pushed by Buffy into his new self. Willow performs a dangerous spell and frightens herself. Anya says something true to Buffy about failure.
Key Moments
Buffy refusing the Shadow Men’s offer and fighting her way out instead. And Anya telling Buffy: “Everyone is scared. That’s kind of the point.” The episode’s best moment is Buffy being told, by someone who loves her, that her anger isn’t leadership — and having to hear it.
