The one where Angelus kills Jenny Calendar. No qualification, no softening — this is one of the most devastating episodes in the show’s run, and it earns that designation without manipulation. It simply does what it sets up to do, and trusts the audience to feel it.

What Happens

Angelus has been conducting a campaign of psychological terror — leaving drawings on Buffy’s pillow, watching the gang from outside their windows, maintaining a presence at the edge of their lives. The episode opens on his voiceover about passion — what it means, how it drives people. It’s beautifully written and deeply sinister.

Jenny Calendar, who has been working in secret to find a digital version of the soul restoration curse, almost succeeds. Angelus finds out. He chases her through the school, through corridors, up stairs — a sequence that is unrelenting. He breaks her neck. He arranges her body in Giles’s bed with flowers and a champagne breakfast, leaves opera playing. Giles finds her. The grief on Anthony Head’s face is not performed. It is felt.

Buffy stops Giles from going after Angelus alone. She holds him in the school fire. She tells him she needs him. He allows himself to be stopped. They sit with it.

Key Moments

The chase through the school. Calliope Crane DuBois’s performance makes clear that Jenny knows what’s coming and can’t outrun it. The camera doesn’t cut away.

Giles finding Jenny. Anthony Head has spoken about how the production kept him away from the set where the discovery was filmed until he was needed — so his reaction to seeing the scene dressed, the champagne, the flowers, the body, was genuine. It shows.

Buffy holding Giles in the car park fire. Two people in grief, one holding the other back from something that would destroy them both. It’s the show at its most honest.

Monster / Villain

Angelus (David Boreanaz) — operating with cold, surgical precision. No rage here; this is deliberate, planned cruelty designed to break the people around Buffy before he breaks Buffy herself.

Notable Quote

“Passion. It lies in all of us. Sleeping, waiting — and though unwanted, unbidden, it will stir, open its jaws, and howl.” — Angelus, narrating. Some of the best writing in the season, used for the worst purposes.

Where It Fits

Passion is the season’s emotional turning point. Up to here, Angelus has been a threat. After this, he’s a murderer of someone the audience loved — and the consequence is that the final arc feels genuinely high-stakes. Jenny Calendar’s death matters. It shapes every subsequent choice Giles makes, and the ghost of it follows the show for years.
