Three things happen in this episode, and all of them are significant. Spike attempts to rape Buffy in her bathroom and is stopped; he leaves Sunnydale in shame. Warren shoots Buffy in the garden; she survives. His second shot kills Tara. Willow, who was holding Tara when she died, absorbs the blood from Tara’s shirt. The episode ends on Willow’s eyes going black.
What Happens
The Trio use the Orbs of Nezzla’khan for a heist; Buffy defeats Warren. Andrew and Jonathan escape. Warren is furious and shoots Buffy through her back garden window. Buffy falls. Tara is talking to Willow in the room above. A bullet comes through the window. Tara says “Your shirt” — she’s noticed Willow’s shirt is bloodstained — and then falls. Willow looks down at Tara’s blood spreading across her own shirt. Her eyes turn black.
Key Moments
Tara’s death — abrupt, random, a stray bullet. The show giving her no hero’s exit. Just a window and a sentence left unfinished. Amber Benson, in her last episode, in a scene that lasts thirty seconds. And Willow’s face after: the grief that the season has been approaching finally arriving all at once, as pure power rather than pain.
Monster / Villain
Warren — who graduates from threat to genuine villain in this episode. The attempt on Buffy is calculated; Tara’s death is a side effect he does not care about.
Notable Quote
“Your shirt.” — Tara’s last words. Two words. A sentence about something mundane. An ending that the show refuses to make dramatic, because death isn’t.
Where It Fits
Seeing Red is the most contested episode in the show’s history. Both its major events — the assault and Tara’s death — generated significant critical and fan discussion. It is not comfortable television. It earns its place as the season’s turning point because of what it costs, and what it sets in motion.
