A demon is manifesting — a shadow creature born from the resurrection spell, inhabiting people around Buffy and speaking through them. The Scoobies fight it. Buffy and Spike talk on the back porch, late, and she tells him where she was: somewhere warm, peaceful — she thinks she was in heaven. She’s never told anyone else. The episode ends with them sitting in the dark together.
What Happens
The shadow creature is dispatched by Anya via a magical dispersal — it can’t inhabit a being already transformed. The more significant events are the small ones: Buffy in the house, touching things, sitting in the kitchen. She’s not adjusting. She’s enduring. Spike, who never expected her back, is managing his own response. His is the face that shows what nobody else will say.
Key Moments
“Heaven.” Buffy telling Spike, specifically, because he’s the one who won’t use the information and won’t flinch from it. “I think I was in heaven. And now I’m not.” The scene is played in near-darkness and doesn’t reach for emotion. Marsters and Gellar sit in the dark and the episode trusts them.
