The Trio uses Buffy as an unwitting test subject — three separate devices that test her under different conditions. The time-loop sequence at the Magic Box is the episode’s best section: Buffy is trapped serving the same customer over and over, each attempt failing in a new way, until she’s been in the loop hundreds of times and gives up, sitting on the counter, telling the mummy hand to deal with it itself. She then gets drunk with Spike. It is a gentler episode than most of Season 6.
What Happens
The Trio’s devices: a temporal marker (time dilation), a speed-up device, and a time loop trigger. Buffy can’t keep a job — she’s too fast, too slow, or caught in a loop. She tries UC Sunnydale again; she tries construction work with Xander; she tries the Magic Box. Each fails. She ends up at Spike’s crypt, playing kitten poker, somewhat drunk. She finds it the most comfortable she’s been all season.
Key Moments
The mummy hand loop — Buffy solving the customer’s request thirty-seven different ways while the Trio monitors the attempts. The joke escalates properly and the payoff (her giving up and telling the hand to handle it) earns the exhaustion behind it.

Where It Fits
Life Serial is the season’s lighter early entry and establishes the Trio as functional antagonists before the show asks darker things of them. Buffy’s comfort at Spike’s — compared to her discomfort everywhere else — is noted.
