The season premiere. Sunnydale High has been rebuilt on the Hellmouth. Buffy is the new counsellor. Dawn is a student. The school’s basement is disturbing — ghosts, voices, something moving in the walls. Spike is in the basement, mad from the soul. The episode opens in Istanbul with a Potential Slayer being hunted by the Bringers, and ends with the First Evil wearing the faces of every villain the show has ever produced. The season announces itself clearly.
What Happens
Dawn is navigating a new school while Buffy counsels students she cannot quite help. The basement generates zombie manifestations targeting Dawn’s new friends. Buffy clears them. Spike, in the basement, is damaged — the soul and the Hellmouth energy are compounding each other. The episode’s final sequence: the First wearing Drusilla, then Glory, then Adam, then Mayor, then Angelus, then the Master, then Buffy. “It’s not about right. Not about wrong. It’s about power.”
Key Moments
The First’s speech — the clearest statement of the season’s theme, delivered by the show’s villain-archive. And Spike in the basement, the camera not quite showing his face, saying things to someone who isn’t there. Marsters has been told by the producers what the soul will cost Spike, and it’s in the performance from this moment on.

Lessons is an efficient premiere that establishes setting (the new school), character status (Spike with a soul, Willow recovering, Giles in England), and threat (the First). It does its job without flash.
