S07E09 – Never Leave Me

Season 7, Episode 9 | Aired: 26 November 2002 | Written by: Drew Goddard | Directed by: David Solomon

Spike is in the Summers house, bleeding and chained. Andrew is in the Summers house, captured and terrified. The Scoobies interrogate both of them. The Bringers attack and take Spike. The episode is effective tension management — establishing what the season needs from Spike while removing him, and giving Andrew enough screen time to establish his role as the season’s unlikely comic constant.

What Happens

Buffy keeps Spike contained while extracting information. Willow and Xander are managing Andrew, who is catastrophically unhelpful. The Scoobies learn about the First’s operations. The Bringers attack the house — coordinated, more dangerous than previous encounters — and take Spike. The Potential Slayers storyline is established: girls around the world are being killed by the Bringers, and they’re heading to Sunnydale. Quentin Travers and a significant portion of the Watchers Council building explode in London.

Key Moments

The Watchers Council explosion — the show removing the institution it’s been critical of for seven years in a single moment. Travers dies without knowing what hit him. The Potential Slayers arriving will change the show’s structure for the rest of the season. And Andrew failing to be intimidating while being entirely intimidated.

Monster / Villain

The First — now escalating from manipulation to direct assault. The Bringers acting as an army.

Notable Quote

“Ow! Oh, that’s blood. Am I crying? I think I might be crying.” — Andrew, being interrogated.

Where It Fits

Never Leave Me is the episode that escalates the First’s threat from atmospheric to operational — the Council destroyed, Spike taken, the Potentials en route. The season’s second half begins from here.
