Buffy’s birthday. Dawn has been stealing — from shops, from the Scoobies — and has made an unguarded wish to a vengeance demon posing as a school counsellor. The wish: that Buffy would stay. Now no one can leave the house. A demon that was in a sword gets loose. It’s Buffy’s birthday, so naturally everything goes wrong. The episode is the show’s gentlest Season 6 entry and is primarily about Dawn and about what it means to need someone to stay.
What Happens
Halfrek is the counsellor. Her wish trap is broken when she’s identified and has to leave herself — she can’t leave either, and her pride gives way to practicality. The demon is dealt with. The house is released. Dawn’s stealing is addressed. Buffy, who has been impatient, understands something about what her absence (the one she chose in The Gift) has done to her sister.
Key Moments
Halfrek’s “William” — she recognises Spike and calls him by his human name, suggesting a prior connection the show never fully explains. And Dawn’s explanation: “I just didn’t want you to leave again.” Everything in the episode flows from that.
Monster / Villain
Halfrek — sympathetic, ultimately, in her own way. The sword demon — incidental.
Notable Quote
“I didn’t want anyone to leave. Ever.” — Dawn. The wish that made literal sense as a wish, and as a statement of grief.
Where It Fits
Older and Far Away is the birthday episode that acknowledges Dawn’s abandonment issues without overdramatising them. It’s a quieter entry in a difficult season and uses the genre premise efficiently.
