The darkest episode of the first season by a significant margin. Xander and four school bullies are possessed by the spirits of hyenas during a zoo trip, and what follows is an uncomfortable, sometimes disturbing portrait of teenage cruelty and pack behaviour. The show earns the darkness by making you feel it.
What Happens
On a school trip to the Sunnydale Zoo, Xander and a group of bullies enter a quarantined hyena enclosure despite being told not to. The hyenas transfer their spirits into the students. The possessed students start behaving like a pack: moving together, turning on the weak, cornering and tormenting a classmate named Lance with a cold and coordinated viciousness that’s genuinely unpleasant to watch.
The possession escalates. The pack eats the school’s mascot pig. They turn on Principal Flutie — and kill him, off-screen but clearly. Buffy has to stop them while also processing the fact that Xander, her friend, is in there somewhere being used as a vehicle for something feral and cruel.
The zookeeper, revealed to be complicit in summoning the hyena spirits for himself, is devoured by the de-possessed students — a punishment that feels almost medieval. Xander is restored, and claims afterwards not to remember any of it. Buffy tells him she knows he’s lying. He says nothing. That’s where the episode ends.
Key Moments
Principal Flutie’s death. It happens fast and the camera cuts away, but there’s no ambiguity. The show killed a recurring character, on screen, with children as the instrument. That’s bold for a first season, and it matters — the rest of the season carries the weight of it.
The final exchange between Buffy and Xander — “I know you remember.” “I know.” — is the episode’s best moment. Nothing resolved, nothing forgiven, just the knowledge sitting between them. The show trusts its audience to sit with that.
Monster / Villain
The hyena spirits and the possessed students, with the zookeeper (Jeff Maynard) as the human catalyst who engineered the possession for his own purposes.
Notable Quote
“There’s something wrong with them.” — Willow, watching the possessed students move together in the corridor. Simple and exactly right.
Where It Fits
The Pack sits slightly apart from the rest of season one in terms of tone — it’s more genuinely disturbing than anything before or after it in these twelve episodes. But it does essential work establishing that the show isn’t always going to hold back. Principal Flutie being replaced by Principal Snyder next season suggests the school didn’t entirely forget what happened here either.
