Buffy is back in Sunnydale. The episode is about how badly that goes — a deliberately uncomfortable half-hour in which everyone has feelings about her return and nobody handles them well. The Scoobies are hurt, Joyce is trying to hold things together with a party, Buffy is defensive, and then a Nigerian mask reanimates the dead across the neighbourhood and the argument has to wait.
What Happens
Joyce has brought home a Nigerian mask — an Ovu Mobani, a demon whose gaze kills and whose influence reanimates the dead. The neighbourhood cat is the first to come back. Then other bodies follow. The confrontation that’s been building all episode — Buffy, Xander, Willow, Joyce, and Giles all saying true things in the worst possible way — is interrupted by a zombie siege on Joyce’s house. Gwendolyn Post isn’t in this episode; this is squarely about family dynamics. The mask is destroyed. The dead re-die. Things aren’t fixed, but they’re patched.
Key Moments
The argument scene is the episode’s real set-piece — chaotic, everyone talking at once, no one quite wrong but everyone unkind. Willow’s “Did you ever think maybe you were wrong to leave?” is the line the episode has been building toward, and it lands.

Where It Fits
Dead Man’s Party is the show doing something awkward on purpose — showing the reunion not as cathartic but as difficult. Buffy being back doesn’t fix what her absence broke. That’s the honest version of this story, and the show tells it.
