The Mayor Ascends into a giant snake demon at the Sunnydale High graduation ceremony, and the Class of ’99 — armed, briefed, coordinated by the Scoobies — fights back. Buffy lures the Mayor through the school and blows it up with him inside. Angel leaves Sunnydale. Cordelia leaves for Los Angeles. The show ends its high school years with a literal explosion and the class looking at the wreckage of the building that shaped them. “What do we do now?” “We survive.”
What Happens
The Mayor gives his graduation address and transforms mid-speech. The class produces weapons from under their gowns. The battle is large-scale, chaotic, and the show commits to showing actual consequences — students die, not just unnamed adults. Buffy leads the Mayor into the library where the bomb is set. She uses Faith’s knife as bait — the Mayor, despite being a hundred feet of snake, stops to lunge at it. The school explodes. He dies. She walks out of the smoke.
Angel leaves in the chaos, without a final scene with Buffy. It’s a deliberate choice. His departure is processed entirely in Angel’s own series premiere.
Key Moments
The student army opening their gowns. Principal Snyder being eaten. The explosion. The Scoobies standing in the rubble, covered in ash, alive. The final image of the series’ high school years: broken glass, daylight, four people who survived.
Monster / Villain
Mayor Richard Wilkins III — who is, even at a hundred feet and full of fangs, still talking about civic pride and good posture. Harry Groener’s performance across the season deserves to be named among television’s best villain turns.
Notable Quote
“Everybody got that? Okay. Break.” — Buffy, after the battle briefing. The class of Sunnydale High, briefed like soldiers. Which they are.
Where It Fits
Graduation Day Part 2 is the ending the show’s high school era deserved — spectacular, consequential, and quiet where it matters. Season 4 begins at UC Sunnydale, which is a different kind of story. This episode closes the door on the first chapter.
