The Halloween episode. A haunted house Halloween party at a frat house summons Gachnar, a fear demon — a house-wide manifestation of the partygoers’ worst fears. Oz nearly loses control. Xander becomes invisible. Willow’s magic spins out. Buffy is lost and alone in a dark corridor, which is less metaphorically complex than the others’. The demon Gachnar, when finally summoned, is two inches tall. Giles steps on him.
What Happens
A student draws the symbol of Gachnar — unknowingly, from a costume prop — and triggers a genuine haunting. The house’s exits seal. Giles cuts through the wall with a chainsaw. The Scoobies find each other and summon Gachnar deliberately rather than letting him grow. The fear demon who has terrorised the entire episode is the size of a fist. Buffy flicks him across the room.
Key Moments
Gachnar’s reveal — the show builds to it with real tension and then punctures it completely. It’s a structural joke, the episode’s central joke, and it lands because the show committed to the horror for long enough beforehand.
Anya’s bunny costume, worn without irony, establishing her rabbit phobia as a running gag.

Gachnar the fear demon — ultimately defeated by being stepped on, which is the correct outcome for something that size.

Where It Fits
Fear, Itself is a strong Halloween episode that uses its genre mechanics to say something honest about the fears each character is carrying into their first university year. Oz’s control issues, Willow’s magical ambition, Xander’s feeling of irrelevance — all of it made literal and then defeated by working together. Tidy, well-executed, funny at the end.
