Jonathan Levinson has cast a reality-altering spell that has made him the world’s greatest celebrity, hero, and Slayer consultant. In this version of events, Jonathan trained the Initiative, wrote the definitive book on vampires, is a world-famous pop star, and Buffy frequently defers to his expertise. The episode is a formal experiment in altered reality and a genuinely sweet portrait of a character who wanted, above all, to matter.
What Happens
The Jonathan-altered reality has a monster — the spell created an opposite, a shadow creature that grows more dangerous as Jonathan’s fame grows. The Scoobies work out something is wrong. The creature is exposed and Jonathan ends the spell. Reality reasserts itself. Jonathan is just Jonathan again — small, uncertain, grateful to still be alive.
Key Moments
The opening title sequence with Jonathan’s name on it. The swim team poster. Jonathan briefing the Initiative. The mundane thoroughness of the spell’s reach — the show commits to the alternate reality with genuine imagination. And Jonathan ending the spell, accepting the diminishment, choosing to be real.

Superstar is the show’s most formally playful standalone episode outside of Hush. It also continues building Jonathan as a character the show respects — someone who matters not because of power but because he keeps showing up. His Season 6 arc will ask harder questions of him.
