The season premiere opens with Dracula arriving in Sunnydale — the actual Dracula, debts to Spike notwithstanding — and enthralling Xander and eventually Buffy herself. The episode is lighter than what follows, playing Dracula as a campy seducer while also seeding the season’s real question: the Slayer’s power has a dark origin, and Buffy is beginning to wonder what it is. Dawn appears at the episode’s end as if she has always been there.
What Happens
Dracula (Rudolf Martin) arrives, Xander becomes his Renfield, and Buffy is bitten and temporarily under his influence. She breaks it, faces him, and stakes him — three times, because he keeps reassembling. He eventually gets the point and leaves. The episode ends with Buffy returning home to find Dawn, her sister, watching TV in the living room. Joyce asks if Buffy told her sister to do something. Dawn has always existed. Except she hasn’t.
Key Moments
Spike’s reaction to Dracula — two vampires who owe each other money, both with enormous egos. And Dawn at the end: the camera holds on Buffy’s face as she processes the sister she suddenly has.

Where It Fits
Buffy vs. Dracula is a crowd-pleasing premiere that does its actual work quietly — planting the Slayer’s shadow-origin thread and installing Dawn as if she’s always been there. The audience is as confused as Buffy, which is the point.
