Spike tells Buffy he loves her. She’s appalled. He kidnaps her and Drusilla at gunpoint to prove his devotion and it does not go well for anyone. The episode is partly farce — Spike’s declaration of love is not well-planned — and partly serious about the fact that the show is asking the audience to track a vampire’s romantic obsession with the protagonist as something other than villainy. Buffy revokes his invitation to her house at the end.
What Happens
Drusilla has returned to Sunnydale, wanting Spike back. He resists, because he’s in love with Buffy. He invites Buffy to his crypt to tell her, which she receives as alarming rather than romantic. He chains both Buffy and Drusilla and offers to stake Drusilla as proof of his devotion. Buffy escapes. He doesn’t stake Drusilla. Buffy rescinds his invitation. He stands outside her house in the rain, unable to enter.
Key Moments
Spike saying “I love you” and Buffy’s face — not flattered, not amused, genuinely unsettled. The show doesn’t soften her response. She finds the whole situation disturbing. She’s right.
