Dawn discovers she’s the Key. She reads Buffy’s diary, finds references to “the Key,” and pieces it together. Her response — breaking into the Magic Box, burning the monks’ documents about her, cutting herself to see if she bleeds “normally” — is handled with the show’s characteristic commitment to emotional consequence. She bleeds. She is real. She just isn’t what she was told she was.
What Happens
The Scoobies have told Dawn the truth, finally, and she doesn’t take it well. She escapes to the hospital, where Ben is working, and has a breakdown. Glory appears — Ben and Glory share a body, the show reveals this properly here — and Dawn is briefly taken before Buffy and the Scoobies retrieve her. Dawn and Buffy have a conversation at the end of the episode that matters more than anything the plot provides.

Dawn asking Buffy “Am I real? Am I anything?” and Buffy’s answer — not philosophy, just certainty. “You’re my sister. You’re real. Everything else is just stuff.”

Blood Ties is the episode that makes Dawn’s arc real — she’s not a plot device anymore, she’s someone processing an impossible truth. Michelle Trachtenberg carries it completely.
