Joyce’s funeral. Dawn attempts to resurrect her. The episode is the immediate aftermath of The Body — the logistics of grief, the funeral, the wake, the silence in the house. Dawn, aided by Spike who finds her the necessary components, performs a resurrection ritual that begins to work. Buffy, furious, tells her to stop it. Dawn stops it. Whatever is coming up the front path turns away. The episode ends with the two of them holding each other in the doorway, the door closed.
What Happens
Angel comes from Los Angeles for the funeral — a grace note, handled delicately. Giles is devastated in a way he manages through logistics. Buffy holds herself together by managing everything. Dawn researches resurrection. Willow and Tara help find texts before Willow stops herself. Spike helps Dawn anyway, because he understands loss. The thing approaching the front door is never shown. Dawn says “Mommy?” and then tears up the resurrection picture. They don’t see what would have come in.
Key Moments
Angel sitting with Buffy through the night — she goes back inside and he stays on the steps and she knows he’s there. No dialogue. And Dawn stopping the resurrection at the last moment — understanding, before the door opens, that whatever comes back won’t be Joyce. The show commits to this and doesn’t show the alternative.
Monster / Villain
Doc (Joel Grey) — a demon with resurrection knowledge who helps Dawn and is more dangerous than he appears. His involvement with Glory will become clear later.
Notable Quote
“She’s not coming back. She’s gone.” — Buffy, to Dawn, breaking down for the first time since finding the body. The episode earns this moment completely.
Where It Fits
Forever is the second part of the two-episode grief sequence. It processes what The Body presented. The show then returns to its Glory arc with the necessary context of what the season has already cost.
