The Buffybot arrives. Warren has built a Spike-commissioned Buffy robot, and it is exactly as alarming as it sounds — though the episode plays it primarily for comedy before pivoting into something more serious. Glory’s minions capture Spike (mistaking the Buffybot for real Buffy) and torture him for the Key’s identity. He doesn’t tell them. Real Buffy, returning from a spirit quest in which the First Slayer told her “love is your gift,” kisses Spike to thank him. She means it.
What Happens
Buffy goes on a vision quest with Giles, seeking clarity after Joyce’s death. The Buffybot entertains the Scoobies, who are initially convinced she’s Buffy and then immediately aren’t. Glory’s minions capture Spike and torture him — he endures it, refuses to give Dawn up, and is rescued by the Scoobies and the Buffybot. Real Buffy tells him she understands now. She kisses him. The Buffybot is not decommissioned.
Key Moments
Spike’s torture sequence — the show being direct about what it costs him to protect Dawn, and not softening it. The episode has been broadly comedic up to this point; the pivot is sharp. And the final scene: Buffy’s gratitude, understated and genuine, and Spike looking like someone who didn’t expect to be seen.
