A Trio demon stings Buffy with a toxin that makes her hallucinate an alternate reality where she is a patient in a psychiatric institution, Sunnydale is a delusion, Joyce is alive, and her parents are visiting. The doctors in the alternate reality encourage her to give up the delusion — to let the Scoobies die, to choose the real world. She almost does. The episode ends ambiguously, and the final shot — Buffy catatonic in the institution — is deliberately never resolved.
What Happens
Buffy alternates between Sunnydale and the institution, each version insisting the other is the lie. In the institution reality, she is a broken young woman who has been there for six years, and her parents are kind to her. She nearly poisons the Scoobies. She chooses Sunnydale. The toxin’s effects fade. The final scene: the institution, Buffy catatonic, the doctor saying she’s gone, her parents at her bedside.
Key Moments
The final shot — the show refusing to resolve the ambiguity. It is not endorsing the alternate reality, but it is acknowledging that the question is live: for a depressed person, the fantasy of a world where none of this is real is seductive, and the episode doesn’t pretend otherwise.

The Glarghk Guhl Kashmas’nik demon — same species as in Flooded. The toxin is the episode’s mechanism.
Notable Quote
“You can beat this. You have to. For us.” — Joyce, in the alternate reality. Joyce, who is dead. The episode knows exactly what it’s doing with this line.
Where It Fits
Normal Again is one of Season 6’s most formally interesting episodes — a genuine exercise in unreliable reality that the show leaves deliberately open. It also gives Kristine Sutherland a last appearance as Joyce, which is handled with care.
