The First activates the Turok-Han — an ancient, pre-human vampire — to act as its physical instrument. Giles arrives with three Potential Slayers. The Turok-Han is stronger and faster than any vampire Buffy has encountered, and beats her across Sunnydale through the night. She survives, barely, through persistence rather than skill. The midseason speech in which she tells the assembled Potentials “I’m not ready” and then “Here’s what’s going to happen” is one of Gellar’s finest moments in the series.
What Happens
The Turok-Han is the Übervamp — more powerful than Buffy, essentially immune to her usual methods. Giles arrives with Annabelle, Molly (Clara Bryant), and Kennedy (Iyari Limon). Spike is being tortured by the First. Buffy fights the Turok-Han in a construction site and is methodically beaten. She keeps getting up. At dawn she crawls home. She gives a speech.
Key Moments
The speech: “I’m not ready… the problem is that there’s a lot of them. And there’s one of me… Every day I wake up and I know that I could die. That makes me different from you. Right now, I need for you to want this.” Gellar plays it as someone choosing, while exhausted, to lead. The Potentials look at her. They stay.

Where It Fits
Bring on the Night is the midseason episode that establishes the stakes for everything that follows — the First has a physical instrument, the Potentials are in play, and Buffy is leading something she didn’t choose to lead. The rest of the season is working toward Chosen.
