Buffy fights the Turok-Han in front of the Potentials, deliberately, having set it up as a demonstration. She wants them to see her win. She does. Spike is rescued from the First’s tunnels. The Potentials are beginning to believe. The episode also introduces Giles’s suspicion of Spike, which will become significant in Lies My Parents Told Me.
What Happens
The Scoobies and Potentials are dealing with another Potential assassination attempt. Buffy’s plan is a deliberate confrontation — she lures the Turok-Han into a visible location and defeats it in front of the Potentials, using knowledge of the terrain rather than superior strength. Willow and Giles find and free Spike. He’s been tortured but is functional. The Potentials’ attitude shifts. Giles notes that the First chose to use Spike, and is troubled by why.
Key Moments
Buffy winning — the show allowing her to be competent and effective after episodes of being beaten. And Spike’s rescue: damaged, conscious, trying. Marsters plays the post-torture Spike with real physical specificity.
