Caleb arrives. Caleb (Nathan Fillion) is a former preacher, now the First’s physical representative — strong enough to fight Buffy, charming in a Southern-gothic way, explicitly misogynist in language and violence. He lures Buffy and the Potentials to a winery by capturing two of them. Buffy walks them into a trap. Xander loses an eye. Several Potentials are killed. The episode is the season’s cruelest half-hour and is entirely intentional about it.
What Happens
Faith returns from Los Angeles. Caleb kills a girl who had no connection to the Slayers, setting up his pattern. Buffy leads the group to the vineyard. Caleb dismantles them — physically, methodically, enjoying it. He gouges out Xander’s eye with his thumb. The Potentials who don’t escape are killed. Buffy retreats. Xander is in the hospital. Faith takes over.
Key Moments
Xander’s eye. The show doesn’t look away from it — it shows the moment cleanly, without dramatic orchestration, which makes it worse. And Faith and Buffy meeting again: older, tired, past most of their history, needing each other.
Monster / Villain
Caleb — Nathan Fillion playing a specific kind of American evil with evident relish. He is the best physical villain the season produces.
Notable Quote
“She’s a whore.” — Caleb, about every woman he meets. His theology is not subtle.
Where It Fits
Dirty Girls is the episode that breaks Buffy’s confidence as a leader — the mistake she makes here will drive Empty Places’s vote of no confidence. It is also the episode that makes Caleb credible as a threat, which the finale requires.
