Someone Made a Shot-for-Shot Claymation Version of Buffy’s Season 3 Opening Credits

Someone has recreated the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 3 opening credits in claymation, shot for shot, and it is exactly as remarkable as that sentence suggests.

The animator in question is Joseph Brett, and the work was posted to Instagram in time for Halloween 2024. Over 53,000 views later, it has made its way around the Buffy fan community and considerably beyond — which is quite the journey for what is, at its heart, a labour of extraordinarily committed love.

For those who need a refresher: the Season 3 opening is considered by many the definitive version of the title sequence. It has the right balance of character moments, the Sarah McLachlan-adjacent melancholy of the instrumental arrangement, and crucially, it includes footage of Faith — which means it arrived at the precise moment the show’s mythology was expanding into something larger than one Slayer’s story. Getting that sequence right matters to people. They have feelings about it.

Brett appears to have understood this, because he didn’t approximate it. He matched it. Every cut, every pose, every background — rendered in clay. The result exists in a peculiar emotional register: it is funny, because clay is inherently a little absurd, but it is also deeply affectionate. You can feel how many times this person must have watched the original to get it this precise.

Fan creativity around Buffy has never really stopped. The show ended in 2003, but the community around it has kept producing — fan edits, music videos, artwork, fiction, analysis, argument, and now claymation. What Brett has made sits comfortably in a tradition of people refusing to let the thing they love go quietly.

It also arrives at an interesting moment. With a sequel series in development and conversations about the show’s legacy more active than they have been in years, there is a renewed audience for this kind of work. People who watched the original are watching things like this with their children. A new generation is discovering the show for the first time. The claymation credits — cheerful, slightly weird, obviously made with enormous care — work as an entry point as well as an act of devotion.

Brett’s Instagram is worth a look if you haven’t found it yet. And if you have already seen it: yes, the library scene is the best bit.
