Charisma Carpenter posted to Instagram on the 16th of July, and the Buffy fandom has been talking about it ever since.

The post is a carousel — boat rides, coffee mornings, live music, a World Cup watch-along, paddle-boarding — and nestled among the holiday snaps are two photographs of Carpenter in a red bikini that have caused something of a stir. She is 56. She looks, as her followers were quick to note, not remotely like someone who has been on television screens since 1997.

“What a wonderful summer and it’s still early,” she wrote in the caption. “So grateful for the friends in my life who helped me celebrate all this week the joy of dancing til you’re dripping wet with sweat, live music, clubbing, travel, boating, paddle-boarding, World Cup watching, eating well and embracing tan lines. Thank you! You know who you are!”

The comments filled up quickly. “Still looking amazing, beautiful.” “You are a goddess.” “This woman is still so stunning.” All of which are true, and all of which rather miss the more interesting point about Charisma Carpenter in the summer of 2026.

The interesting point is that she seems genuinely happy.

It is not a trivial thing to say. Carpenter’s relationship with the Buffy franchise has been, at various points, complicated and painful — years in which she felt sidelined, allegations she made publicly in 2021, the difficult process of deciding what her relationship to that chapter of her career would look like going forward. The woman dancing until she’s dripping with sweat, posting red bikini selfies and crediting her friends for making her summer extraordinary, is someone who has clearly come out the other side of something.

She turned 56 on the 23rd of July. The summer, as she says, is still early.

Cordelia Chase spent three seasons of Buffy and four of Angel being the sharpest, funniest, most unexpectedly moving presence in the room. The woman who played her appears to be doing rather well. It is pleasant news, and the fandom — which has had a difficult few months — deserves some.
