San Diego Comic-Con 2023’s Sunday closing event has been announced — and it’s very Buffy.
Fandom Charities, TheHellmouthCon, and SixDegreesOfGeek are hosting an interactive screening of “Once More with Feeling” as the convention’s grand closing event on Sunday July 23rd, from 3:00–4:30pm.
The setup is explicitly Rocky Horror-style: audiences are encouraged to talk back, sing along, and dance in the aisles. “This episode was made for talkin’—back, that is—and singing and shouting and dancing in the aisles, with or without your dry cleaning!” The event description promises a surprise guest.
“Once More with Feeling” is Season 6, Episode 7 — the musical episode in which a demon compels everyone in Sunnydale to spontaneously break into song, revealing their secrets in increasingly disastrous ways. It remains one of the most inventive hours of television Buffy produced, and one of the most inventive hours of television full stop.
Making it the closing event of Comic-Con’s Sunday is exactly the right instinct. Whoever that surprise guest turns out to be, this is going to be a good room to be in.
