If you were a fan of Buffering the Vampire Slayer — the beloved podcast in which Jenny Owen Youngs and Kristin Russo rewatched all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer through a queer lens, with Youngs writing an original song for every single episode — you’ll be thrilled to hear they’re back.
The new podcast is called The Ex-Files, and yes, the name is doing a lot of work. Youngs and Russo were married when they launched Buffering in 2016, divorced partway through the run, and then finished the entire series together anyway — concluding with an epic live prom night event at the actual filming location for Sunnydale High School. It was, by all accounts, extraordinary.
For The Ex-Files, the premise is the same: one devoted fan, one newcomer, watching a beloved genre show together and discussing it through a queer lens. Except this time the show is The X-Files, and the “exes” in the title is no longer just a clever pun. New episodes drop every Wednesday.
If you’ve never listened to Buffering, it’s one of the finest Buffy podcasts ever made. Consider this your reason to start from the beginning.
