Sarah Michelle Gellar is heading to the French Riviera. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Gellar will receive the Canal+ Icon Award at Canneseries 2023 — the French television festival that runs alongside the international market MIPTV — in recognition of her life’s work in television.
That body of work begins and largely hinges on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but extends well beyond it. The festival runs April 14–19, and Gellar will be honoured alongside The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star Morfydd Clark (rising star award) and Emmy-winning creator Joey Soloway (Transparent), who receives a commitment award for social engagement in the TV industry.
An Icon Award for life’s work feels right. Buffy reshaped what television was allowed to do with genre storytelling, female protagonists, and serialised drama. The show’s cultural footprint has only grown in the two decades since it ended. For the actress who was at the centre of all of it for seven seasons, this kind of recognition has been a long time coming.
