The theory has been floating around for years: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dexter share the same fictional universe. The evidence is slim but oddly compelling — a fast food chain called Doublemeat Palace appears in both. Buffy took a job at a Sunnydale branch in Season 6. Angel Batista was eating Doublemeat burgers in the first season of Dexter. The chain doesn’t exist in the real world, and it doesn’t appear anywhere else in fiction. Writer Drew Z. Greenberg worked on both shows. The connection is almost certainly a deliberate nod — but it opened a door.
The door has now been made considerably more confusing by the casting of Sarah Michelle Gellar in Dexter: Original Sin.
Gellar plays Tanya Martin in the prequel series — a forensic analyst at Miami Metro, Dexter’s boss and mentor. She is a major presence in the show. Not a cameo. A lead character.
This creates what one might call a casting paradox. For Buffy and Dexter to share a universe, Buffy Summers and Tanya Martin would need to coexist — a vampire slayer in Sunnydale, California and a forensic analyst in Miami, Florida, at broadly overlapping points in time. Tanya Martin is a middle-aged woman before Buffy even begins high school. Which means either the universe theory is dead, or something more complicated is happening.
The “something more complicated” camp has a reasonable case. The Buffyverse, as confirmed extensively in the canonical comics, has a multiverse. Parallel dimensions appeared on the show as early as Season 3’s “The Wish.” An alternate Buffy in which the show’s events concluded forty years earlier, freeing a retired Slayer to reinvent herself as a forensic analyst in Miami, is not actually an incoherent premise. Odd. But not incoherent.
Julie Benz complicates things further. She played Darla in Buffy and Angel, and Rita Bennett in Dexter. Two characters, two franchises, same face. The shared-universe theory has to account for this as well — which the multiverse reading can, just about, though it requires some working.
Whether any of this was intentional on the part of the Dexter: Original Sin casting team seems doubtful. It was probably just good casting. But the Buffy fandom being what it is, the conversation will continue for as long as Doublemeat Palace remains an unexplained Easter egg. And one suspects it always will.
