Buffy Summers wasn’t the last Slayer. Not in the BOOM! Studios universe, anyway — and this August, her successor is finally getting the spotlight she deserves.
BOOM! Studios has announced a new five-issue limited series: Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer, written by Casey Gilly with art by Oriol Roig. Gilly has been writing in this corner of the Buffyverse for a while, and this is their most ambitious project in it yet.
The series focuses on Thessaly — Thessa to her friends — a young woman in her early twenties who picked up the Slayer mantle from Buffy. She’s got a job on the boardwalk of Santa Carmen, California, a crush on a cute co-worker, and a string of gruesome supernatural murders to deal with. The name Santa Carmen is a nice touch: it quietly echoes Santa Carla, the seaside vampire town from The Lost Boys.
Gilly is clearly delighted to be back: “It always feels SO GOOD to sink my fangs back into Last Vampire Slayer!” Roig’s enthusiasm matches: “Urban fantasy with monsters, magic, romance, drama… What’s not to love?”
Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #1 goes on sale in August. If you’ve been following the BOOM! run, this is the next chapter you’ve been waiting for.
