Great news for anyone who’s been missing the Buffyverse: James Marsters has returned as Spike in Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, a new audio series available on Audible — and he’s brought a lot of familiar faces along with him.
Set 20 years after the Buffy series finale, the story follows Spike and his old demon pal Clem (James C. Leary) as they keep tabs on the underbelly of Los Angeles. Things get complicated when they cross paths with a brand-new Slayer, played by Laya DeLeon Hayes, and Spike finds himself reluctantly stepping into a mentor role. Very on-brand.
The cast reunion is genuinely impressive. Alongside Marsters and Leary, Slayers brings back Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Head, Juliet Landau, Emma Caulfield Ford, Danny Strong, and Amber Benson — who also co-wrote the series alongside Buffy novelist and comic writer Christopher Golden. Having Benson behind the script as well as in front of the microphone is a nice touch.
Marsters says slipping back into Spike felt completely natural. “It was easy, as it should be,” he said. “Like they say in acting, ‘If it’s working, it’s easy.'” He’s also clearly thrilled to be back in the world: “I’m ecstatic to be back with my dear friends for this next chapter in the Buffyverse, as we take listeners on a familiar but unexpected journey chock full of horror, passion and mischief.”
If you’ve been craving new Buffyverse content, this is about as good as it gets right now. Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is out now on Audible.
