Nathan Fillion Revealed What Joss Whedon Taught Him About Playing a Villain

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits cinemas this week, and ComicBook.com sat down with some of the cast ahead of release. Two of them happen to have Buffyverse connections worth talking about.

Nathan Fillion — who played the preacher-villain Caleb in Buffy Season 7 — talked about what playing that role taught him. Specifically, what Joss Whedon told him: “The villain doesn’t think he’s the villain. He’s justified and he is righteous.” It was Fillion’s first time playing a true villain, and the lesson has clearly stayed with him.

Sean Gunn — Kraglin in the Guardians films, brother of director James Gunn — had a different kind of Buffyverse story. He auditioned for a lead regular role on Angel, didn’t get it, but was cast twice in small guest roles: Lucas in “Hero” and Mars in “She.” He’s philosophical about it.

Two Guardians. Two Buffyverse footnotes. A good week to be a fan of both.
