Sarah Michelle Gellar has given the clearest statement yet on where she stands with the long-discussed Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot: she wants it to happen. She just doesn’t want to be part of it.
“One hundred percent, if the story is right,” Gellar said when asked about the possibility of a revival. But in the same breath, she made clear that she sees a reboot as someone else’s story to tell. “The way the show was left, any girl who wants the power can have the power. It doesn’t even have to be Buffy’s story, per se — it could be any of the slayers’ stories when you open it up like that.”
She also ruled out a cameo, reasoning that even a brief appearance would overshadow whoever takes on the new lead role. “Even if I did a cameo, it would just be compared. You want to give someone a chance to create from scratch.” It’s a remarkably selfless position — stepping aside so the new thing has room to breathe.
The reboot has been discussed for years. Creator Joss Whedon was once attached, with writer Monica Owusu-Breen developing a version centred on a new Slayer. That project stalled, and producer Gail Berman confirmed in 2022 it was still on pause with no network attached. The practical situation hasn’t changed — but knowing the original Slayer is rooting for whoever comes next feels like something worth knowing.
